Abstract

A quaternary onium compound is added to polymerizable vinyl esters of carboxylic acids to inhibit polymerization. Quaternary onium compounds are defined as those compounds which contain a pentavalent atom of Group V of the Periodic Table, wherein four valencies are satisfied by linkage to carbon atoms and the fifth valency is satisfied by an anion. In examples, trimethyl (and triethyl) benzylammonium acetate and trimethylbenzylammonium resinate are added to vinyl acetate. The following stabilisers are also specified: tetraethylammoniumacetate, tetrapropylammoniumresinate, triamylmethyl (and ethyl) ammoniumacetate, trimethylcyclohexylammoniumacetate, triethylcyclohexylammoniumresinate, trimethylphenylammoniumacetate, triethylphenylammoniumresinate, ethylpyridiniumacetate, alkoxyalkyltrialkylammonium salts, dialkoxyalkyldialkylmonoarylammonium salts, tetramethyl (and ethyl) phosphoniumacetate and tetraethylarsoniumacetate. The butyrates, propionates and sulphates are mentioned and hydroxyl, halogen, carboxyl, nitrile and amino groups may be present.
