Abstract

567,465. Boots &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). June 19, 1943, No. 9910. Addition to 537,981. [Class 17 (i)] Insoles, machines for.-The rotatable means for applying reinforcing strip material to an insole in a machine as described in the parent Specification is driven instead of being freely rotatable. In a preferred form such means comprises a roll formed with gear teeth on that end which will lie nearer to the rib or lip of the insole, when the latter is in the machine, which teeth serve to drive the roll, preferably at a greater peripheral speed than the rolls which feed the insole. Tension on the strip at the point of its application is then relieved and distortion of the insole avoided. In the form shown, Figs. 1, 6, the strip-applying roll 40 has two parts 72, 74, one of which 74 applies tape to the part of the insole over the channel and base of the rib, while the other 72, which is slightly smaller in diameter, applies it to the body of the insole. The roll 40 is carried by an arm 42 on a rock shaft 32 and, on operation of the rock shaft by a treadle rod 36, it is brought into co-operative relation with the feed rolls 18, 22 for the insole. Simultaneously, the upper feed roll 22, which is carried on a shaft 20 supported in a yoke 28 pivoted at 30 to the head frame 10 of the machine, is yieldingly depressed, through a link 38 connected to the rock shaft 32, against an insole supported by the lower feed roll 18. The roll 18 is mounted on a shaft 12, and is driven by a belt 16 and pulley 14. A shaft 50 is driven from the shaft 12 through chain 58 and sprocket wheels 54, 56 at greater speed than shaft 12 and drives the roll 40 and teeth 74 thereon at greater peripheral speed than upper feed roll 22 and in the same direction through gear 70, and sprocket wheels 60, 64 and chain 62. The roll 40 is pressed against the rib of the insole. In a modification, the roll 40 may have teeth on the channel engaging part only, the remainder being smooth. In a further modification, the channel engaging part of the feed roll is mounted on a lever urged by a spring against the insole, the initial position of roll, amount of yield and tension of spring being adjustable so that it will engage the insole channel irrespective of variations in depth of such channel, as shown in Fig. 6. The upper feed roll 22 may have teeth or knurling on a part of its surface to increase grip on the insole further. Specification 555,063 also is referred to.
