Abstract

567,222. Electromagnetic switches. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and SHEPARD, S. C. July 30, 1943, No. '12394. [Class 38 (v)] An electromagnetic relay is associated with an indirectly - heated thermistor, the heating current of which is adjustable, thereby providing an adjustable time lag. In the arrangement of Fig. 1, the supply is connected to the points X, Y and the heater r1 of an indirectly-heated thermistor T1 is heated by current derived from an adjustable part of a resistance R6. The thermistor has a negative temperature coefficient so that after a time lag its resistance R1 becomes sufficiently reduced for the relay A to operate. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), giving a greater time lag, the heater r1 is in series with the resistance of a second thermistor, the heater of which is adjustably heated. This second thermistor must heat up before the full heating current can flow to the first thermistor. Additional thermistors may be added in a similar way.
