Abstract

567,005. Coating workpieces. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). April 22, 1943, No. 6450. [Class 95] A method of applying a liquid coating to a workpiece of sheet material which comprises (a) enveloping the workpiece between two sheets of substances which are impervious to the liquid, one of said sheets being flexible and having a plurality of separate capillary perforations, and (b) subjecting the enveloped workpiece to the action of the liquid in such manner that the liquid enters the said perforations and penetrates those adjacent to edges of the workpiece thus coating those edges. Fig. 4 represents a shoe upper part with a serrated edge S, at its rear margin. This edge is to be treated with a stain (or ink) without staining the remainder of the part. The shoe part enters along the feed table 48, Fig. 5, and is clamped between a shielding rubber member 24, and a perforated, non-absorbent rubber member 22. The work W, thus covers the upper ends of some of the perforations in 22, and seals them, causing air to be trapped therein. As the workpiece W passes between the presser roller 70 and an ink-carrying member 18, which consists of a resilient core 36 and an absorbent felt surface 38, dipping into the ink supplying vessel 20, the perforated member 22 is forced upwards around the workpiece W, causing ink to force its way into the space P, Fig. 12, and so coats the edges of the workpieces. Ink does not impinge on the lower surface 14 of W since the air seals prevent it, neither does it coat the upper surface 16, which is protected by the shield 24. The perforated member 22 and the shield 24 may be formed of endless belts and means may be provided for removing and cleaning 22 and also for washing ink from 24 and squeezing and brushing the surface dry. Specification 507,217 is referred to.
