Abstract

Capsules of gelatine or the like containing medical or pharmaceutical substances are protected by one or more layers of a non-cellulosic substance, e.g. sugar or talc, and have interposed between the protective layer and the gelatine an insulating layer of a non-enteric cellulose compound, e.g. collodion, which may also serve as an adhesive for the protective layer. Insulating layers may be interposed between successive protective layers. The protective layer may be applied by means of an aqueous solution of an adhesive, e.g. sugar syrup or gum acacia, or the capsules may be dipped into a solution of the protective substance and then dried, or coating may be carried out in an open rotary drum, the axis of which is arranged obliquely. The protective coating may consist of an enteric substance, e.g. shellac or keratin. According to the Provisional Specification, the protective coating may be of pearl, and is not limited to non-cellulose substances. Also the intermediate coating is not limited to non-enteric cellulose compounds, and reference is made to the use of varnish.
