Abstract

566,328. Distilling acetaldol. DISTILLERS CO., Ltd., TUERCK, K. H. W., and LICHTENSTEIN, H. J. Feb. 24, 1943, No. 3042. [Class 32] Pure acetaldol is obtained from mixtures containing it, e.g. crude acetaldol obtained by the condensation of acetaldehyde with alkali which contains free acetaldehyde and polymerized products, by leading the mixture into a fractionating column in counter-current to the vapours of a normally liquid hydrocarbon which is immiscible with acetaldol and has a boiling point between 170‹ and 300‹ C., maintaining the pressure in the column such that the temperature at the top thereof is not more than 90‹ C., condensing the distillate and separating the acetaldol layer from the hydrocarbon layer. Acetaldol containing 20 per cent acetaldehyde was introduced at the top of a column through which vapours of dodecane were passed upwardly. The temperature at the top of the column was maintained at 75‹ C. and the pressure was about 25 mm. of mercury.
