Abstract
566,272. Subpress mechanism. ELKING- TON, T. W. July 29, 1943, No. 12329. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] Subpress mechanism for punch and die sets which may also be used for follow-on tools or for stamping dies, is arranged to permit removal for grinding and replacement without losing the setting. The set comprises a base-plate 1 carrying pillars 20 on which the upper plate 17 slides by bushes 19. A slot in the back of the plate 17 to receive a boss with upper and lower flanges in which a screwed spindle is mounted to bear on the lower plate and provide means for raising and lowering the plate 17 during setting up. Rotatable bushes 4 with slots 5 in the lower plate 2 provide for adjusting this in any direction before clamping by bolts 3. The die a is of rectangular form with bevelled sides 10 for engagement by clamping blocks 7 having slotted engagement with their bolts. The opposed blocks 17 have a ribbed engagement with corresponding ribs on the plate 2 and act on the actual clamps 12 through screw-controlled wedges 13. Tapped holes in the plate 2 receive studs 32 on which slotted plates 31 are clamped between nuts to provide adjustment for distance from the die surface. Slots 35 provide for adjustively locating and clamping slotted stripper fingers 36. The punch is located on the plate 17 by a dovetail 21 and shoulders 23 in conjunction with screws 29. Location lengthwise of the slot is secured by a notch engaged by a key 25 having a lug 26 located between collars 27 on a screw 28. Work-holders.-A work-holder of similar construction to the punch holding means on the plate 17 may be employed for holding the punches during machining.
