[Class 20 (iv)] [Also in Groups XXXII and XXXIII] A floor for. a building, ship, motor vehicle, &c. comprises a series of units a which are made of comparatively thin gauge sheet metal and are adapted to be supported at their ends, and at suitably spaced intermediate points, on joists or bearers. Each unit a, Fig. 1, may be in two parts, an outer part of U-shape to provide a rectangular base 1, which forms the upper or tread surface and may have embossed non-slipping ribs &c. 4, and arms 2 with inwardly-directed - flanges 3, and an inner bracing part having a base 5 and outwardlyinclined arms 6 with inturned flanges 7, these parts being so disposed that the flanges 7 rest on the flanges 3 with the base 5 in contact with the base 1. The flanges 3, 7 are secured by welding and, if desired, the bases 1, 5, which are preferably moved transversely to give increased strength, may be welded together. The units are secured to the joists by metal clamping strips 9 which bridge the gaps between adjacent units and are apertured to receive flxing bolts 8 on said joists. The inner bracing part may be dispensed with by bending the flanges 3 to form upwardly extending bracing struts, the free ends of the latter being bent to provide flanges parallel to the base 1 to which they are secured, as by welding. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the unit is formed from a solid drawn or welded tube which is pressed or rolled to provide a tread portion 14, side walls 15, inturned flanges 16, bracing struts 17, and a flattened portion 18 which is secured to the underface of the tread by welding. Some of the units may be replaced by ordinary wooden boards, and metal or wooden straps may be provided transversely across and below the said units, intermediate the joists, to distribute any locally applied load.
