Abstract

566,025. Dehydrating alcohols. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Feb. 4, 1942, No. 1461. Convention date, Dec. 27, 1940. [Class 32] Aliphatic alcohols containing from. 2-5 carbon atoms in the molecule and boiling up to 150‹ C. are dehydrated by azeotropic distillation with an entrainer comprising an aliphatic hydrocarbon having from eight to twelve carbon atoms in the molecule, particularly polymers of unsaturated hydrocarbons, e.g. iso-octane, di-isobutylene, iso-octene. A mixture of iso-propyl alcohol and water is fed through line 1 to a fractionating tower 10 to which the entrainer is admitted through line 2. The ternary vapour mixture taken off overhead is condensed in condenser 5 and passed to a separator 7 from which the upper phase comprising the entrainer, some alcohol, but little water, is refluxed to the tower 10 through line 8, while the lower aqueous layer is removed through line 9 for separation of its alcohol and entrainer contents. The dehydrated alcohol is recovered through line 11. The water layer is separated by distillation in tower 14, the alcohol and entrainer being recovered overhead and returned through line 15 to tower 10. Alternatively, the aqueous layer may be passed to a vessel 19 to which a small quantity of water is supplied through line 20 and the mixture passed to separator 22 where an upper layer of entrainer separates and is returned through line 23 to column 10.' German Specifications 142,502 and 287,897 are referred to.
