Abstract

565,797. Making structural members. TRUSSED CONCRETE STEEL CO., Ltd., and GREEN, D. H. July 29, 1943, No. 12364. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Angular bending.-A bar 7 is bent into a zig-zag by feeding it step-by-step and, during the intervals, bending it about three fulcrums a, b, c simultaneously, a being fixed, b moving in an arc about a, and c moving axially of the bar. Starting from the position shown, in which a previously bent portion A of the bar is held between correspondingly shaped jaws 16, 17 and another bend B has just been formed, the fulcrum b, in the form of a stud 27 fixed in an arm 26, is moved about a pivot 28 by a cam 33, a slide 30, and an adjustable link 29 to the position shown in broken lines. Directly the stud 27 disengages the bend B, the fulcrum c, which takes the form of an eye 12b, through which the bar 7 passes, carried by a slide 12, is moved to the left by a spring 13 till it engages a stop 12a. The jaws 16, 17 are then separated by cams 21, 22, the rod is advanced by rollers 5 one pitch and the jaws 16, 17 are closed. The cam 33 then swings the stud 27 back into its original position, thus forming another bend, the rod being pressed against the eye 12b and moving it, and the unbent bar, to the right during the process. The advance of the slide 12 may be limited by a stop (not shown). Welding wire fabrics.-While the work is being moved as a whole to the right, two bars 35 may be moved with it, by automatically operated clamps 39 on a reciprocating slide 37, and while the bending operation is taking place and all feeding movements have ceased, the bends, adjacent the bars 35, may be resistance welded thereto by means not shown. In this case the roller feed 5 may be omitted. Two structural elements thus formed may be similarly connected by a third zig-zag to form a trough-section member or by a third and fourth to form a box-section. The bars 7 and 35 may have any desired cross-section.
