Abstract

565,567. Cleaning metals. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I., and GILBERT, H. N.. Oct. 16, 1942, No. 14502. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group III] Metal articles are cleaned by contacting them with a molten composition comprising one or more alkali metal hydroxides containing dissolved alkali metal amide. The surface of the bath is protected from oxidation either by passing a stream of ammonia gas which may be mixed with non-oxidizing or inert gases, such as nitrogen or hydrogen into the bath or by the use of a floating layer of solid insoluble material thereon such as charcoal or graphite. The bath may comprise sodium hydroxide'with or without diluents such as borax, cyanides, strontium or barium chlorides, and 1-25 per cent by weight of sodamide with or without up to 20 per cent by weight of sodium hydride. After treatment with the bath, the articles are quenched in water. The composition may be produced by the interaction of ammonia with alkali metal oxide dissolved in a fixed mass of alkali hydroxide or by floating a layer of molten sodium on the surface of fused caustic soda and passing in ammonia so that it comes 'in contact with the sodium at the interface between the sodium and caustic layers. If hydrogen is mixed with the ammonia, sodium hydride is also produced in the bath. The cleaning of iron sheet articles and of non- ferrous metals and alloys, such as copper and nickel, is referred to. Specification 557,530 is referred to.
