Abstract

565,511. Filters. PICKARD, J. A., and METAFILTRATION CO., Ltd. April 3, 1943, No. 5372. [Class 46] A filter system for lubricating oil comprises a pump supplying oil past a non-return valve to a filter having associated therewith an air chamber at the unfiltered oil side, whereby air pressure built up in the air chamber maintains the flow of oil in the same direction through the filter when the pump is stopped. The air chamber may be external to the filter chamber or provided by a space therein located above the filter elements. The filter elements may be of the edge type, but, as shown, the filter elements 8 are of the porous leaf type comprising annular cells 9 formed by pairs of elements joined at the outer edges and spaced apart at the inner edges by washers 11 with radial grooves therein to form channels, whereby the annular cells 9 communicate through apertures in a tubular member 10 with the delivery space formed around a rod 13 and leading by a cross channel 31 in such rod to a bore 30 and so to the discharge conduit 32. The rod 13 has screwed ends and serves to retain the closure cap 20 which is formed or fitted with a bell 4 to form an air compression space located above the filter elements. A spring 23 acting on a washer 24 and felt packing ring 26 presses on a bell-shaped member 25 to force the filter elements tightly against each other. Lubricating oil to be filtered is supplied by a pump past a non-return valve 3 to the outside of the filter elements and rises to compress the air in the compression bell 4 ; filtration is effected by passing through the porous leaves and this will be continued under the air pressure in the compression space when the pump is stopped as on stoppage of the internalcombustion engine for which the lubricating oil is being supplied. The arrangement is of use where such engine is used on short runs. Specifications 432,102 and 469,152 are referred to.
