[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] Relates to bevel closing chuck collets, for use in single or multiple spindle automatics, and of the type in which interchangeable gripping pads are provided, and consists in an improved arrangement of the pads and of the clamping de vices for securing them The collet is provided with slots 4, Fig. 1, form ing fingers adapted for bevel closing and pro vided with a ground recess 2 and end surface 3. The pads 5 are prefer ably formed from a ring ground to suit the sur faces 2, 3 and cut into segments. Registering holes 10 in the fingers and pads receive blocks 12 with outer end surfaces 13 formed at 45 degrees and inner surfaces 14 formed at 15 degrees to a transverse plane. Grub screws 16 are inserted from the ends of the collet, engage the blocks to force the pads outwards and downwards onto their seating surfaces, and have reduced ends engaging holes in the blocks to effect location. The outer ends of the blocks are too large to allow them to pass into the bore when released from the screws for changing the pads. In a modification, the pads have inclined clamping surfaces 21, Fig. 7, near their outer ends and the blocks 12a are located in slots in the end face of the collet and provided with a rib 23 that serves as a fulcrum during tightening of the screws 24.
