Abstract

564,967. Multi-cylinder engines. DAVIES, G., DAVIES, A., and DAVIES, R. A. Sept. 8, 1943, No. 14723. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] A multi-cylinder internalcombustion engine comprises a number of cylinders arranged in pairs in axial alignment, the pistons being all connected together for reciprocation as a unit for driving the crankshaft. End castings 1, 2 and a central casting 5 are connected to the crank-case and provide cylinders for pistons 8 ... 11 of which the pistons 8, 9 are connected by a rod 12 and pistons 10, 11 by a rod 13. A rotary valve sleeve 14 surrounding the pistons is driven by a gear 15 from the main shaft and has partition walls forming housings for spring-pressed slidable members 19, 28, 29 operating as described in Specification 564,886, and each having a passage which registers, as the valve is rotated, with inlet and outlet ports 22 and a sparking plug or injector opening 23 circumferentially spaced in the cylinder wall. Cooling and lubricating oil is injected into end chambers 30, 31 and central chamber 32 by pipes 33 ... 35 and part of this oil lubricates the sleeve 14. The rods 12, 13 are connected by a link 36 slidable in a recess in the outer wall of sleeve 14 and the end pin 38 is connected to a member 41 having a thrust bearing comprising castellations 42 in a member 44 pivoted to the connecting rod 46. A number of four-cylinder units may be arranged side by side to operate connecting rods on a common main shaft.
