Abstract
564,708. Treating liquids. PATERSON, SIR W. April 3, 1943, No. 5373. [Class 46] In the treatment of liquid with reagent to remove undesired materials, the liquid with reagent is passed horizontally through a mixing and agitating chamber in such manner that all of the liquid is subjected to a showering therethrough by power-driven agitators of sediment arising from previous treatment with the reagent, or other catalytic nuclei. As shown, the treatment is effected in a tank a to which the liquid is supplied through a ring conduit o<1> with reagent entering at an inlet n. The liquid is circulated by an impeller i, at three or four times the rate of entry of new liquid, through a mixing and agitating chamber b formed below a sloping roof d. Paddles e effect the showering of the sediment through the liquid thereby to precipitate the impurities on to the nuclei. The heavier particles are moved by the paddles towards a well p for ultimate removal. The liquid passes upwardly from the mixing and agitating chamber through baffles k<1> for suppressing eddies to a clarification space c whence the clear liquid passes away over a weir trough m.
