564,622. Feeding sheets. BACKHOUSE, H. T. April 1, 1943, No. 5258. [Class 100 (i)] In apparatus for feeding sheets to printing and like machines, the sheets are registered laterally by a reciprocating draw-bar 16 with which co-operates a pressure roller 24 or a gripper member, to draw the edges of the sheets against a lay 12 formed integral with a base-plate 10, the bar 16 being slidable in a recess in the plate 10. The registering devices are built as a self-contained structure carried by a frame 11 and adjustable as a whole upon a rod 13 laterally of the sheets, and, if desired, also in the direction of the length of the sheet. The bar 16 is formed of thin flexible sheet steel, and its upper surface is flush with the top of the plate 10. The bar is attached to a lever 17 oscillated by an arm 21 on a shaft 22 operated by a rod 23 from the printing-machine. The sheets are also controlled by a smoothing device 36 which is carried by a vertical slide 37, Fig. 2, and the pressure roller 24 and the smoother 36 are operated by a common lever 29 operated by a presser-foot 33 on a rock-shaft 34 operated in unison with the machine. Normally, both the smoother and the roller 24 are raised as the sheets reach the front stops, and the smoother then falls under spring action to an extent controlled by a screw 45 and lever 44 which engages a slot in the slide 37, and thus the smoother can be set for sheets of different thickness. Finally, the roller 24 engages the sheet against the draw-bar 16 acting through a slot 40 in the smoother, and the bar 16 then moves outwardly to register the edge of the sheet against the lay 12, the sheet moving from position represented by line 50 to a position represented by line 51. To allow for wear, the bar 16 can be fitted with a detachable plate of phosphor-bronze at the place where the roller 24 engages the bar.
