Abstract

Laminated materials are made by treating fibrous sheets, such as paper or cloth, first with a solution or emulsion of a condensation product of an aldehyde with aniline or a substituted phenol or cresol, then with a powdered, dissolved, or emulsified thermosetting resin, e.g. a phenol- or cresol-aldehyde resin, and subjecting the superposed fibrous sheets to heat and pressure. The substituted phenols or cresols have not less than two substituents with at least one carbon atom, or one or more substituents having 2-6 carbon atoms, e.g. butyl or amyl phenols, xylenols, or the corresponding substituted cresol. A small quantity of metallic soap, e.g. aluminium stearate may be added to the resins used in either treatment. Specification 458,364 is referred to.
