Abstract
The mechanical strength of asbestos yarn is increased by impregnating it with a melamineformaldehyde resin syrup which is curable under alkaline condition and curing the resin. The resin may be in aqueous or alcoholic solution, which may contain wetting, sizing and softening agents and may be alkylated with methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, amyl, benzyl, 2-ethyl hexanol, n-octyl, and lauryl alcohols, or with monoalkyl or monoaryl ethers of ethylene or diethylene glycol, e.g. the monoethyl ethers; alkaline curing catalyst may be used. The impregnated yarn may be dried before further heating to cure. The impregnated yarn may be reinforced with fine wires. If desired, the resins may be partially cured, part or all of the soluble resin may be removed by washing with water or alcohol and the remaining resin further cured. The impregnated yarn may be woven into fabric. A suitable resin syrup is that prepared as described in Specification 557,807, diluted with ethanol before use. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the use of dicyandiamide formaldehyde resins which may be modified with melamine urea or thiourea as well as phenol- and cresol-formaldehyde resins. The impregnated yarn is also stated to be suitable for the production of moulding compositions. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 557,807.
