Abstract

563,561. Electric measuring systems. ZIEBOLZ, H. Nov. 20, 1942, Nos. 16476 and 16477. Convention dates, Nov. 4, 1941, and March 17, 1942. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Groups XXXVI, XXXIX and XL] Electronic translating apparatus including a cathode-ray tube is characterized by the combination of means for intercepting the cathode beam, an input system applying a deflecting force to the beam to vary the amount of interception by the intercepting means, and a system responsive to the amount of interception by the intercepting means for establishing an opposing deflecting force which varies synchronously with the deflection of said beam and increases in proportion to the amount of deflection of said beam until equilibrium is established between the two deflecting forces and the deflection is thereby limited. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which a cathode-ray beam 25 works between anodes 26, 27 connected to a load 31. Deflection of the beam due to a signal resulting from physical change or mechanical movement from a device 33 is effected by a coil 32. A compensating coil 34 energized from a potentiometer 35 connected across the output, exercises an opposite effect to coil 32 to improve the linearity of the output characteristic. According to modifications, Figs. 2-9 (not shown), either or both of the coils 32, 34 may be replaced by a pair of electrostatic deflecting plates or by a movable permanent magnet or electromagnet. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 11, the primary deflection of the electron beam is caused by mechanical displacement of a permanent magnet 46, and a compensating coil 34 is provided. Zero setting means for compensating for the magnet 46 in its initial position is provided by a coil 46a fed by a battery 46b and coupled to coil 34. With this arrangement an ammeter 45 gives a measure of the displacement of the magnet 46 and hence a measure of the quantity causing the displacement. In a further modification, Fig. 12 (not shown), the zero setting is performed by an adjustable permanent magnet. The arrangement may be used in translating electrical, magnetic or electromagnetic signals, or for measuring electrical, physical or chemical quantities. The Specification as open to public inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts also includes the matter which is the subject of Specification 564,382, [Group XL]. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
