Abstract
563,071. Valves. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 15, 1943, No. 6042. Convention date, June 24, 1942. [Class 7 (vi)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A valve for an internal-combustion engine has a shell of copper or the like and a plated coating of chromium. A core 5 of low melting point metal, such as lead, is first formed by extrusion or similar process, a tappetengaging plug 7 inserted in the end and the assembly electro-plated with copper or brass, this shell 11 being locked to the plug at 13. The lead core is then melted out through aperture 9 and the shell coated with chromium or other corrosion-resisting metal. The hollow valve thus formed may be filled with sodium or other coolant 17. In some cases if coolant is not required the core may remain as part of the valve.
