Abstract

562,785. Lubricating grease. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. July 31, 1942, No. 10716. Convention date, Aug. 15, 1941. [Class 91] Lubricating is prepared by mixing fat or other saponifiable material with a saponifying agent and preferably a small amount of mineral oil at a temperature lower than the saponification reaction temperature, continuously heating the mixture in a small stream to that or a higher temperature, maintaining the mixture at the higher temperature until the saponification is complete, and continuously withdrawing the finished lubricating grease soap stock to be mixed with further quantities of oil to form the grease. Preferably an alkaline earth saponifying agent is used and the initial mixture is heated for less than 10 minutes at about 300‹ F. to 450‹ F. in a pipe coil heater, after which the mixture is maintained at least at 250‹ F. for at least 15 minutes in a reaction zone. The mixture may be maintained under pressure. In the arrangement shown, a mixture of commercial hog fat 75 parts, hydrated lime 16.5 parts, water 7.5 parts and mineral oil 7 parts is forced from a mixing chamber 1 by a pump 1.0 through a pipe heater 2 to a reactioncompleting vessel 3 from which the soap stock may be passed directly to storage through pipe 14, or into a grease blending mixer 4 when it is mixed by a batch process with oil from the pipes A to E, or to a high speed mixer 18 where it is mixed by a continuous process with such oil. The saponification may be carried out at pressures of 15 to 250 pounds per square inch to facilitate hydrolysis of the glycerides and retain a sufficient proportion of water to assist in forming the grease structure ; accordingly safety valves such as 13 are provided on the reaction-completing vessel 3. Two or more mixing tanks 1 may be provided so that a continuous supply of the starting mixture can be delivered to the pipe heater. 2. Suitable materials and compositions for grease making are indicated. U.S.A. Specification 2,084,974 is referred to.
