[Class 52 (ii)] In a seat or chair of the slung canvas type, a supporting member for the occupant's thighs (or back or head) consists of a pivoted and detachable member mounted on the front transverse seat-supporting rod (or upon the transverse back-supporting rod) and arranged either between the upper and lower canvas runs of the seat (or the front and rear canvas runs of the back) or externally of the canvas with its rear (or bottom edge) resting on the canvas. The pressure of the occupant's thighs or back or head adjusts the angular position of the supporting member. As shown in Fig. 1 as a thigh support for use with a canvas seat of the endless band type, the thigh support 1 comprises a curved structure of sheet metal, wood or plastic material, having a series of holes 8 ... 13 in its sides to receive selectively a pivotal rod 14 which may be passed through holes in the supporting brackets 15. The endless band 16, 17 constituting the seat may be passed over the rod 14, as indicated by broken lines, to take up sag. Further adjustment may be effected by passing the lower strand of the endless band over a spare rod 19 which may be inserted in vacant holes 8 ... 11. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the holes 8 ... 13 are dispensed with and the thigh support is slotted at the sides to hook over the pivot rod 14. Instead of the pivot rod 14, side studs secured by nuts may be used. The upper strand 16 of the endless band instead of passing directly over the thigh support may first be passed under and round the rod 19 located in the holes 13. Instead of an endless band, a single strip may be used. As shown in Fig. 3, the thigh support 23 hooks over the front bar 24 of the seat and the flexible band passes through slots 25, 26 therein. In further modifications, Figs. 5, 6 and 7 (not shown), the thigh support is secured to the front rod of the seat by spring clips or by string, the rear edge of the support resting on the canvas. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the thigh support 45 rests on the canvas seat and hooks on to the front rod 48. In a further modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the thigh support is of complete box section enclosing the front rod of the seat and lying between the two strands of the endless band. To constitute a support for the back, neck or head of the user, the device is placed on the top back-supporting rod of the seat.
