Abstract

562,135. Observation devices. FOSTER INSTRUMENT CO., Ltd., and DAVIES, J. T. Nov. 17, 1942, No. 16241. [Class 51 (i)] A window structure for covering a furnace peep hole and for use particularly, but not exclusively, in screening a radiation pyrometer, is provided with means for delivering jets or currents of air a,t superatmospheric pressure over the surface of the window exposed to the furnace. As shown in Fig. 1, the sighting tube 2 is provided with a window 1 clamped between a flange 3 of a screwed cap 8 and a ring 4 spaced from the tube 2 by a ring 9. Air supplied through an inlet 6 is delivered through holes and slits 7a, 7b in the ring 4 and passes radially over the surface of the window 1 before passing through the sighting tube 2 to the furnace. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, air is fed to the sighting tube 2 by a pipe 11 and passes rearwardly into the furnace and also forwardly over the window 1 and to the atmosphere through four conduits 12 arranged at right angles to one another and formed between rectangular plates 14, 15 formed with circular openings to expose the window 1. The plates 14, 15 are clamped together and form a rectangular slide which is movable in a rectangular holder formed by plates 17, 18 clamped together, the plate 17 being provided with screwed boss 19 engaging the end of the sighting tube.
