Abstract
561,932. Fluid-pressure servomotor control systems. RAMSAY, D. Nov. 25, 1941, No. 15149. [Class 135] A servomotor control system for an internalcombustion engine supercharger comprises a boost control unit subject to induction pipe pressure arranged to control a pair of power devices, one of which controls the speed of the supercharger while the other actuates second control, such as a throttle valve. In the form shown in the Figure, a first stage compressor 3 is driven by an exhaust gas turbine 4 under the control of a valve 9, while a second stage compressor 10 is driven by the engine 5 and controlled by the throttle 14 for the carburetter 13. The valve 9 is connected by a linkage 31 with a double-acting piston 30 loaded by a spring 32, while the throttle valve 14 is coupled by a linkage 29 with an unloaded double-acting piston 28. Pressure fluid from a conduit 20 is simultaneously admitted or exhausted to and from the cylinders 23, 24 housing the pistons 28, 30 under the control of a control valve 18 actuated by a capsule 16 subject to the pressure in the engine induction pipe. The anchorage of the capsule is adjusted by a cam 17 actuated by a pilot's control 15. As the aeroplane climbs the piston 28 is gradually moved to the right so opening the throttle 14, when this piston has reached its extreme position the piston 30 is moved to the right to move the valve 9 towards its closed position and so bring the first stage unit into operation. To maintain the speed of the gas turbine within safe limits, temperature sensitive elements arranged in the inlet and outlet conduits of the first stage compressor are connected to members 35 adapted to actuate a control valve 36. As the speed rises the temperature difference increases and moves the valve 36 to energize a power piston which acts through the linkage 31 to move the valve 9 towards its open position.
