561,871. Crushing or pulverizing machines. HIGHFIELD, J. S., and FAIRLEY, T. Nov. 26, 1942, No. 16815. [Class 59] A crushing or pulverizing machine of the revolving hammer type has an inlet for the material to be treated located about the vertical plane containing the axis of rotation of the hammers so that the hammers strike the material substantially horizontally and the wall of the machine is so shaped that the material so struck impinges on the wall at an acute angle and ricochets in the direction of the discharge outlet of the machine. In the machine shown in Fig. 1, material fed through the opening c is struck by the revolving hammers e and directed against the wall l of the casing in the form of a circular arc struck from a centre below the centre of the rotor a. The rotor carries end plates f on which the hammers e are pivoted. The casing has a removable section d serving for inspection purposes. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the casing has four plane impact surfaces and the material is discharged into a hopper o and on to a screen p through which the fine material passes on to a conveyer, the coarse material being returned by an elevator to the feeding inlet of the machines. In both types of machine the space between the rotor and impact walls increases in width downwardly and the wall opposite to the impact wall conforms fairly closely to the path of the hammer tips.
