[Class 143] In an apparatus for grading glass tubes or other articles by weighing, the articles are fed successively to a holder carried by a damped balance beam and, when the beam comes to rest, are pushed by a transfer device through a selected aperture in a column thereof according to the depression of the beam, the articles being positively registered with the selected apertures before or during their transfer. In the form shown, for use in grading glass tubes, a rotary feeder 14 transfers the tubes successively to the notched end of a weighbeam 1 which is consequently depressed to position the tube according to its weight adjacent to one of a column of delivery shoots 4. Tapering pins 22 on a slide 23 move into engagement with a pin 24 on the weighbeam to ensure precise registration of the tube with a shelf which then receives the tube as it is pushed off the weighbeam by a pair of cam-operated arms 19. Instead of employing the slide 23 to ensure the correct transfer of tubes from border-line positions, the arms 19 may be provided with tapering pins which, on the forward movement of the arms engage the tubes and either lift or depress them sufficiently to ensure their correct transfer. A battery of weighbeams and associated feed and transfer devices arranged side-by-side may be employed to increase the output.
