Abstract

Modified resins which are thermoplastic are obtained by removing halogen from polymers containing a -chlor or a -brom-acrylic acid units. Preferably the polymer is heated in the presence of a primary or secondary alcohol. The process may be carried out by hydrolysis with water in the presence of the alcohol. A mineral acid catalyst may also be present. Specified starting materials are homopolymers of a -chlor and a -brom-acrylic acid and copolymers of them with methyl methacrylate or styrene or a vinyl ester, e.g. acetate. The primary or secondary alcohol is preferably monohydric and specified monohydric alcohols include alcohols of the general formula CnH2n+1CH2OH (n=1 to 5). Methyl, isopropyl, lauryl and benzyl alcohols are also mentioned. The modified resins can be formed into films and sheets suitable for use as supports for photographic emulsions or as interlayers for safety glass. Films may be cast from solutions in acetone, 1.4-dioxane, ethyl acetate, the monoethyl ether of ethylene glycol or mixture of acetone and methyl alcohol or ethylene chloride and acetone or methylene chloride and ethyl alcohol. The resins are compatible with various plasticisers: a long list is given. Examples are given of the hydrolysis of poly a -chloracrylic acid by means of aqueous n-primary butyl, methyl, ethyl, propyl, hexyl, lauryl, isopropyl and benzyl alcohols. Examples are also given of the treatment of copolymers of a -chloracrylic acid with methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate and styrene, and of polymers of a -brom-acrylic acid. An example is given of a film obtained by casting a solution of a resin obtained by hydrolysing poly a -chlor-acrylic acid with aqueous n-primary butyl alcohol, in acetone and di(b -ethoxyethyl) adipate. This butyl resin dissolved in acetone alone was also spun into filaments. The lauryl resin was extracted by "Skellysolve G," a mixture of low-boiling saturated hydrocarbons.
