Abstract

A process of preparing ester-amide polymers comprises heating in two stages, firstly to 150 DEG -180 DEG C., and subsequently to 180 DEG -250 DEG C., a mixture comprising bifunctional polyamide-forming and bifunctional polyester-forming reactants which consists at least of a monoamino-monohydric alcohol and a dibasic carboxylic acid. In addition to these reactants, the mixture may contain other bifunctional reactants, e.g. diamines, amino acids and hydroxy acids. The complementary reacting groups should be present in substantially equimolecular proportions, and not less than 5.0 molar per cent of the amino alcohol, based on the other reactants, should be used. The preferred amino alcohols are those having a chain of less than 4 carbon atoms separating the amino and hydroxyl groups, and the preferred dibasic carboxylic acids are those having a radical length of at least 6. Examples are given of the preparation of ester-amide polymers from: (1) ethanolamine, sebacic acid and hexamethylenediammonium sebacate; (2) ethanolamine, o -hydroxymyristic acid and sebacic acid; (3) ethanolamine and sebacic acid; (4) ethanolamine, sebacic acid and hexamethylene - diamine - sebacic acid salt; (5) 6-aminocaproic acid, ethanolamine and sebacic acid, and (6) ethanolamine and adipic acid.
