Abstract

560,954. Cooling or drying food &c. WEERTH H. K. DE. Sept. 22 1942, No. 13311. [Classes 34 (ii) and 64 (ii)] [Also in Group VI] Apparatus in which food or other material may be cooked by steam, dried by air, or cooled preparatory to packing comprises a fixed chamber a having a supply hopper 1 and discharge 2 for the material, and fitted with a perforated rotary drum b having a helicoidal fin 11 and stirrer blades 12. Steam may be admitted to the interior of the drum by a pipe 9 with perforated branches 10 to direct the steam through the surface of the drum into the material. The chamber is connected by ducts 14 with a fan 15 so that drying air may be drawn or forced therethrough, and a chimney 4 is provided. In addition the chamber has a jacket 21 for a heating or cooling medium, and a tank c for collecting juice &c. from passages 16, 17 at one end of the chamber. The juices may be heated by medium in the jacket of thetank, and may be returned by a pump 20, drawing from separate levels 18, 181. The drum is supported by rollers 6 and may be rotated through a gear wheel 8 first in one direction to charge the chamber, then to and fro while the material is under treatment, and finally in the direction to discharge the material. Cooling in the jacket may be effected by water, or by a low temperature medium.
