Abstract
559,400. Folding beds. CALDER, A., and PEARSE, A. C. Oct. 29, 1942, No. 15169. [Class 52 (ii)] A folding bed comprises transverse ground or floor bearers, a bed top of flexible material secured to longitudinal rails supported by posts, oblique stays extending between the bearers and the posts, and clips or fastening devices for positively but releasably securing the posts to the longitudinal rails and/or bearers. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, each side post 6 is detachably connected to the foldable longitudinal rail 3 by a dowel 7 and a turn-pin 12 which may be engaged with an angular wire member 8 secured to the rail. In a modification, Fig. 8, a slotted plate 15 turned up at its lower end engages a bolt 19 passing through the post. An oblique stay 21, Fig. 3, is pivoted to the post and to a transverse bearer 5 resting on the ground. A U-shaped catch 24, Fig. 3, is fastened to the lower end of the post, and in assembling the bed the catch is passed under a spring plate 11 riveted at 26 to the bearer, and is retained by a stud 28, a safety latch 30 being swung over the spring plate to avoid accidental disengagement. The strength of the spring plate 11 may be regulated by longitudinal adjustment thereon of a clamp 32. In a modification, Fig. 5, (not shown) instead of supporting the post resiliently on the spring plate 11, the plate may be rendered rigid by supporting it on a non-springy plate. The part 6 may be attached to the transverse bearer 5 by a pivoted loop 41, Fig. 6, engaging a spring plate 37 secured to the bearer. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the lower end of the post 6 rests in a notch in the bearer 5 and is detachably retained by a turn-pin 48 engaging an angular member 45. In a further modification, Fig. 11, side plate 49 are secured to the post 6 and are provided with studs 51 to engage a hole in the nearer 5. A bolt 53 locks the connection. Instead of the studs 51, the bolt 53 may pass through the hole in the bearer. The oblique stay 21 may engage the bearer by means of a slot and bolt connection.
