Abstract
559,064. Respiratory appliances. ABBEY, A. (American Optical Co.). July 22, 1942, No. 10271. [Class 81 (ii)] A respirator for use by individuals exposed to smoke and dust and the like comprises a cup-like felt member shaped to fit over the nose and mouth of the wearer and having a corrugated wall and a continuous edge portion with which a portion of a face-contacting member of relatively resilient material interfits and is sealed thereto; the face-contacting member may be annular with incurled edge portion adapted to have side contact with the face. As shown the face-contacting member 1 covers the mouth and nose of the wearer and the face-engaging edge portion 2 had an inturned lip 3 to which the continuous edge portion of the filter member 4 is sealed by cement, adhesive, adhesive tape, or other means; the member 4 is formed of felt or the like provided with folds or corrugations 14 to increase the filtering area and is shaped to conform to the general inner contour of the member 1. The member 1 has a number of relatively small inhalation openings 5 and relativety large exhalation openings 6 at the bottom of the member 1 provided with a valve comprising in apertured cup-like member 7 having a flanged edge secured in the opening 6 and having a resilient flap 12 of rubber an the like covering the apertures 9. The flap 12 may be held over the apertures by headed pins 13 in the member 7 snapped into small openings in the flap. Modified forms of valve are described. A head band 21 may be secured to clips 19 carried by brace rods 20 within the member 1. When the face-contacting member 43, Fig. 14, is of annular form, it has a flange portion 46 overlying and secured to the continuous edge portion 466 of the filter member 44 which is reinforced internally by a continuous wire or other member 46a bent to provide loops 48<SP>1</SP> which are secured to opposite sides of the member 43 by a web 47 or the like and having two loops 48 extending from the rivets to closely adjacent the inner face of the member 44 in a line following folds or corrugations 49<SP>1</SP>; the loops 48 may be joined by extensions 49a connected by a rubber, metal, or other collar 57 and there may be one loop 48 or more than two loops. The filter member may be formed from a cone-shaped member folded to form the corrugations and the corrugations in the filter member may be arranged to run vertically or horizontally. The filter member may carry a disinfectant and may be provided with a protective covering of stockinette or the like.
