Abstract

559,013. Pipe joints. SMALLPEICE, C. D. P. July 25, 1942, No. 10438. [Class 99 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] A packing ring for a pipe joint comprises a casing 15 formed of a metal or alloy which is harder or less flexible than a packing material 16 which fills its interior and is pressed against the surfaces of pipes 11 when co-acting members 12, 19 carrying the ring are tightened to compress it. The edges 17 of the casing at the operative periphery extend slightly towards one another so as to enclose the adjacent portions of the filling and engage the pipes to act as a seal. The casing 15 may be corrugated and the edges 17 may be pointed. The casing may be made of copper, bronze or steel and the filling of lead, white metal, rubber, cement, or amalgam, or the operative surface of the filling may be coated with cement or a mouldable synthetic resin. The figure shows a casing 15 with frustoconical surfaces compressed by a socket 12 and a female nut 19, a hard ring 24 preventing the filling being forced through the joint 25.
