Abstract

558,949. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and DOE, A. April 25, 1942, No. 5584. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXI] A cartridge belt 10 is fed to the feed box of a machine gun at a rate equal to that at which ammunition is consumed by the gun by means of a feed roller 11 which moves the belt towards an idler roller 12, the feed roller being driven in synchronism with the idler rollers by a hydraulic motor 18 to which the supply of liquid is controlled by the idler roller. As shown, the hydraulic motor 18 is of the reciprocating followup servo kind comprising a grooved distributor rod 20a, Fig. 1A, slidable with respect to a ported piston 42 from which extends a rod 21a. The rods 20a, 21a are linked to cranks 19, 22 on the idler and feed rollers respectively. To overcome the dead centre positions, a duplicate cylinder 18 is connected to cranks arranged at right-angles to the cranks 19, 22. Fig. 3 shows a rotary vane motor 118 for driving the feed roller 11, a liquid feed to the motor through a diametral passage 24 and pipe 30 being controlled by a sleeve valve 25 driven by the idler roller. The sleeve has apertures which pass into and out of register with the supply passage 24 in the member 23 fast with the vane to cause the vane to follow-up the movement of the sleeve.
