Abstract
558,049. Controlling aircraft. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd., Sir W. G., and LLOYD, J. July 21, 1942, No. 10164. [Class 4] An aeroplane is provided with lift-spoiling means operable either when the landing-gear becomes loaded or when the brakes are applied during landing and subsequent taxi-ing. As described a spoiler 19 on the upper surface of a wing or a spoiler 19a on an extension flap is operable only when the extension flap is in its rearward position. The flap is mounted as described in Specification 558,043 and a projection 31 on the forward suspension link engages an arm 20 supporting the spoiler to prevent it from being projected so long as the flap remains nested. When the flap is displaced rearwardly the projection 31 is moved clear of the arm 20 so that fluid pressure applied to a jack 16 through a flexible connection 15 can raise the spoiler 19 through the linkage shown. The pressure is derived from the landing gear as it becomes loaded or from the braking system. In the form shown in Fig. 4 the spoiler 19a is prevented from functioning by the surface 34 of the wing when the flap is in its normal nested position. Flaps arranged as in Specification 558,044 with ailerons arranged as in Specification 558,045 may be used.
