Abstract

557,846. Coating metals. PYRENE CO., Ltd. (Parker Rust-Proof Co.). May 27, 1942, No. 7204. [Class 82 (ii)] In the forming of an article having a surface of iron, zinc or cadmium or an alloy of iron, zinc or cadmium, the sheet is coated with a chemical solution, e.g. a phosphate solution, to form a coating weighing less than 150 mgs. per sq. ft., the coated surface painted and the sheet then formed into the article. This sheet may be made of ferrous metal with an electrodeposited layer of zinc on it, and the weight of the coating is preferably less than 110 mgs. per so. ft., e.g. 50-100 mgs. per sq. ft. If the coating contains zinc phosphate, a heavier coating than that desired may be formed on the surface, and then reduced to the desired weight by treatment with a solution of chromic, acid or a dichromate. The coating may be an oxide one and produced by treatment with a metal etching acid and an oxidizing agent, e.g. a solution containing 20 gms. of sodium chlorate and 20 c.c. of sulphuric acid in a gallon of water. Exceptionally thin coatings may be produced by passing the sheets between resilient rolls while being coated, and the phosphate coating solution accelerated by both a nitrate and a chlorate as described in Specification 551,261 may be used.
