Abstract
557,823. Cementing plugs for wells &c. CUTHILL, J., and OIL WELL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. June 18, 1942, No. 8380. [Class 85] Plugs for use in cementing casings in wells &c. are formed by. moulding or casting in concrete or like cementitious material and have annular packing rings or diaphragms cast therein; means also are provided whereby, on penetration of the plugs by drilling, the drilling mud is stained a distinctive colour. A bottom plug, Fig. 4, has a reduced upper end 6b in which a flexible ring or diaphragm 8 of rubber &c. is held by nails, wooden pegs &c. 9. A tube 11 of compressed paper, artificial resin &c. extends across a recess 10 in the plug to form a handle, while passages 12, 13, allow for the flow of cement &c. forced past the ring &c. 8 A container 30 is cast in the plug, or inserted in a recess cast therein, and contains a dye &c. in solid, powder, liquid or crystal form for colouring the drilling mud. A top plug, Fig. 5, may be reduced at the central part 14b, and also has a rubber diaphragm 15, flanged sealing ring 18 and a dye &c. container &c. 31 cast therein.
