Abstract
557,619. Lathes. HEPBURN, J, T. March 25, 1942, No. 3947. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1941. [Class 83 (iii)] A lathe particularly for removing the pip from the end of a shell B has a tool holder carrying a tool movable in forward and reverse directions beside the end surface of the work by a hydraulic cylinder controlled by a lever connected to screw means for moving the tool towards or away from said end surface simultaneously with reversal of the cylinder movement. The shell B is rotated by a headstock 10, and in the form shown a slide 12 is movable transversely of the lathe by means of a rod 16 operated by a hydraulic cylinder 14 and pneumatic cylinder 15 connected in tandem. The tool 11 is mounted in a holder C on a slide which is moved along guides in a direction longitudinal of the work the movement being effected by a screw 18 carrying a disc 20. A lever 21 controlling the valve which directs fluid to the cylinder 15 is connected by a link 23 to the disc 20. Thus as the control lever is moved to cause the cylinder 15 to move the slide 12, the screw 18 is at the same time actuated to move the tool up to the cut so that it removes the centering pip from the shell end When the control lever is moved to cause retraction of the slide 12 the 'tool is withdrawn axially of the work by reverse rotation of screw 18 and damage to the end of the work is prevented.
