Abstract
557,386. Electrolytic treatment of tungsten wire. TAPP, E. T. J. May 11, 1942, No. 6370. [Class 41] Tungsten wire is annealed or polished by continuous movement through a bath of caustic alkali which contains or is in the form of a tubular nickel cathode through which the wire, which is engaged by a positive contact and forms the anode, passes. The device may take the form shown in Fig. 1 in which the bath 13 and the tubular cathode are disposed vertically and an armature 18, 19 causes the cathode 17 to vibrate, a scrubber 16 of felt., glass wool &c. is provided and the treated wire is passed through a washing bath 14 and so to a driven take-up roll 15 ; the cathode 17 may be in telescopic sections or of helical form and in place of the arrangement shown the wire may move upwardly, the bath 14 then being disposed above the electrolytic bath. As shown in Fig. 2, the baths 13, 14 are disposed horizontally, the wall of the electrolytic bath forming the tubular cathode. In this form the baths have top openings 23, bath 13 is mounted on a resilient pad 31 and may be vibrated by an electromagnet, and the take-up roll 15 on which the treated wire is wound is driven from a motor 28 through a variable speed gear 29 and a belt or chain 30. Specification 554,829 is referred to.
