[Class 133] [Also in Group XXXIV] In hydraulic brake systems of the kind in which pressure acting against a brake operating piston is built up by throttling the delivery of a pump by a hand- or foot-operated valve, the throttling is effected between this valve and a sleeve, the other end of which forms a byepass valve which, when it is unseated by the development of a pressure above a predetermined maximum, byepasses liquid from the pressure side of the piston and by engaging the manually-operated valve increases the hydraulic reaction on that valve. As shown, the manually-operated valve a is slidable in a sleeve c slidable in the stem g of a brake operating piston e, the cylinder of which is connected to the pump b. The end c<SP>1</SP> of the sleeve forms an annular valve normally seated by a spring c<SP>2</SP>. To operate the brake, the delivery from the pump is throttled at'd by movement of the valve a and if the hydraulic pressure which builds up against the piston e and the sleeve c is sufficient, the valve c<SP>1</SP> is unseated to byepass liquid through the passage f and may engage the valve a thus increasing the reaction on the pedal by which the valve a is operated.
