Abstract
556,681. Chucks. HEELEY & PEART, Ltd., and ALLDAY, G. W. Nov. 7, 1942, No. 15763. [Class 83 (iii)] Chucks for taps and other tools with polygonal shanks have the drive transmitted through balls that rotate during relative axial movement between the chucks and tools so that the latter may be inserted without stopping the rotation of the chucks. As arranged for a square shank tool four balls 10 are mounted in radial bores 12 in a centre part 11 held in the chuck body 6 by screws 13 that adjust the ball positions according to the shank size, being locked after adjustment at 14. Coiled springs may be interposed between the screws and balls. Two sets of balls axially spaced may engage the square of the shank. Rollers or pivoted segments may be employed instead of balls. The shank of the tap may be steadied near the middle of its length as described in Specification 556,682.
