Abstract

556,471. Stamping. UNITED STATES PIPE & FOUNDRY CO. April 2, 1942, No. 4414. Convention date, June 21, 1941. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Tubes are contracted on to a mandrel at the same time becoming elongated, by the application of fluid pressure to the exterior. The process is particularly applicable for reconditioning moulds for the centrifugal casting of pipes. A substantial chamber 10 with a head 16 has the end closed by a steel plate 30 with a heavy backing plate 31 held on by bolts that do not extend into the head as far as the part that is subjected to the fluid pressure to avoid weakening the section. The chamber is bored to take the mould 13 with slight clearance and is contained in the head to take the socket end. A spacing ring 22 supports a U-section leather packing ring 21 with a backing ring 20 engaging the flange 19 of the mould that fits the bore. The mandrel 12 has an integral or inserted screw 25 on which is mounted a separate section 24 for the socket clamped in place by a nut 26. One or more filling blocks 28, 29 are provided. - The parts 24, 28 and 29 are tapped for eye-bolts for use in handling. The spigot end of the mould is spaced from the mandrel by a rigid sleeve 34 tapered at 35 so that when the mould is contracted it will not form a shoulder at the end of the sleeve. The sleeve is flanged at 26 for clamping in place by a two part ring flanged at 37, 39, this latter flange engaging a groove in the mould and fitting the bore in the chamber. The parts are dowelled and held together by a spring ring 43 in a groove 44, and the end is bevelled at 48 to facilitate introduction into the bore. Seal against fluid pressure is effected by a steel ring 45, a fibre or tin-lead alloy ring 46 and U-section leather ring 47. The fluid pressure admitted at 49 acting on these parts tends to elongate the mould and the mandrel is lubricated to facilitate the sliding of the sleeve 34. Specifications 334,634, 334,960, [both in Class 83 (ii)], 350,336 and 352,824 are referred to.
