Abstract
556,386. Wood boring bits. HAYWOOD, A. E. May 22, 1943, No. 8177. [Class 83 (iii)] Drills for wood and like relatively soft materials, comprise a shank carrying a tubular portion with a sharp cutting edge at its end, and a radial cutting edge on a member detachable from the tubular portion and located within it. The shank 11, Fig. 1, has an enlarged end terminating in a tubular member having an annular cutting edge 14 and provided with an opening 13 for the escape of cuttings and to afford access to a screw 19 that secures in place both an insert 15 having a longitudinal groove 16, and a cutter 18 having a radial edge 17 and projecting into a slit 20 in the tubular member. The parts are separated to permit easy regrinding. In a modification the shank is integral with the inserts, the tubular member being attached thereto. The radial cutting edge may be constituted by one edge of the insert and in this case is continued by a tooth formed laterally in the annular edge. The bore of the tubular member may taper outwards, the insert being correspondingly tapered ; this results in a thin annular edge and a tooth in it is then unnecessary. In a further modification the radial cutter is attached directly to the shank, the insert being dispensed with.
