Abstract
555,938. Machine guns. NORTH, J. D., and BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. Feb. 10, 1939, Nos. 4482 and 14282. [Class 92 (ii)] Cartridge-belt feed mechanism for heavy machine guns comprises a belt or chain 24, Fig. 1, from which the cartridges are extracted sideways and inserted into the side of the breech, an arcuate guide 18 concentric with the gun trunnions 16 serving to guide the base of each cartridge as it comes to a loading position corresponding to the angle of elevation taken up by the gun. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the belt links 24, having side apertures for the cartridge rims, pass over a sprocket 18 driven by ratchet teeth on a concentric sleeve by an arm 54 intermittently moved in one direction during the action of the. gun by a rocking shaft 66 connected by links with the gas piston 68. Return movement of the sprocket is prevented by a pawl 50. To prevent the inertia of the loaded belt from restricting the rate of fire, an initially-stressed spring 32 may be inserted between the operating mechanism and the sprocket 18. The cartridges are pushed from the belt by levers 56 on a slide 62 reciprocated by an arm 64 on the shaft 66. In a modification, Fig. 5, the belt links 40 partly surround the middle portions of the cartridges and are moved by a sprocket 182 arranged on the gun cradle 14 with its axis parallel to the axis of the gun. The bases of the cartridges are guided by the surface of a large roller 180 on the gun trunnion and the bullet ends are guided by a fixed arcuate casing 184 concentric with the roller.
