Abstract

555,087. Cigarette-making machines. HILBERT, E. R. Nov. 11, 1941, No. 14514. Convention date, Nov. 12, 1940. [Class 130] In a continuous-rod machine actuated by hand or power, a tube of cigarette paper is formed by helically winding about a barrel 17 a paper strip 76 fed intermittently from a reel 70 by an inclined endless belt 57, and tobacco is fed continuously to the tube from a hopper 42 by a worm 20, cigarettes being severed from the resulting rod 93 by a knife 117 pivoted in a frame 113 carrying a guide tube 118 for the rod. The hopper 42 converges to a trough in which is the worm 20 driven from a crank handle 36 through gearing 33, 32, 27, 26 and a contrate gear 23 mounted on the head 21 of the worm. The end of the worm is provided with an offset wire finger 44, Fig. 8, and resilient agitating fingers 47 may be mounted on a rod 46 extending through the bore of the worm and connected to a resilient arm 48 actuated by cams 50 on the gear 23. An agitating blade 51 in the hopper is connected by a web 52 to an arm 53 sliding in a guide 54 and having a vertical slot engaged by an eccentric pin 56a on the gear 33. The endless belt 57 has at least one turn around the barrel 17 and passes around a drum 58 on a shaft 60, and also over a spring tensioning arm 67 and between spaced vertical pins 68. The drum 58 has a flange 65 and engages the belt by means of short pins 64, and is driven intermittently by means of a ratchet wheel 63 on the shaft 60 and a pawl 103 pivoted on a control arm 97 freely supported on the shaft 60. - The free end of the control arm carries a pointed pin 101 extending between a pair of discs 95 on a shaft 86 which is driven through bevel gearing 88, 90 from the shaft 28 of the gears 27, 32. The pin 101 extends into the path of eccentric pins 96 on the discs 95 to an extent determined by a finger gauge 106 mounted on the arm 97 and having a rod 107 carrying a head 108 bearing on the cigarette rod 93 with a pressure adjusted by a slide 111. The extent to which the pin 101 is engaged by the pins 96 is therefore determined by the pressure of tobacco in the cigarette rod, which thus controls the actuation of the shaft 60 by the pawl 103. The reel 70 of cigarette paper rests in a receptacle 73 and the strip 76 is drawn over a guide 77 and a table 78 beneath the belt 57, by which it is drawn around the barrel 17 in a helix. The gummed edge of the strip is moistened at intervals by a wick 81 in a reservoir 80 supported in a spring bracket 83 and lifted intermittently by a cam 92 on the shaft 86 acting upon a depending finger 91 on the bracket 83. The knife 117 pivoted in the frame 113, Figs. 1 and 6, comprises a holder 121 pivoted on a pin 122 and a removable blade 123. A spring 127 bearing on the blade is actuated by a finger 126 on a connecting- rod 124 loosely journalled in a bearing 125 on the base 10. An anvil 131 rests loosely on a shoulder on the rod 124 and extends through a recess in the support 61, beyond which it is provided with a loop 133 engaged by a light wire spring 138 extending downwards from an arm 134 pivoted upon the support 61. When a cam 137 moves the arm 134 outwards, the spring 138 turns the anvil 131 into the path of an arcuate projection 140 on the control arm 97, so that the anvil 131 and the knife are actuated on the next movement of the drum 58 by the control arm. On its return movement, the anvil is turned back into its normal position by the sloping upper surface 142 of a standard 141.
