Abstract

554,820. Boring-heads. WILLETT, V. W., (trading as LUSHINGTON TOOL MANUFACTURING CO.). Nov. 27, 1942, No. 16863. [Class 83 (iii)] The shank 1 of a boring-head, for reception in the machine spindle, is formed with an enlarged end 2 with a transverse slot 4. The tool holder 6 has a flange 7 resting against the ends of the jaws 3 and a flat portion 5 that is a sliding fit between the jaws. A sleeve 8 is a close fit on the part 2 and is secured in place by a set screw 17 passing through one of the jaws 3 and serving also to lock the tool .holder after adjustment by a screw 11 threaded into the holder, passing through the slot 4 and retained in the sleeve 8 by a graduated head 15 and an end 12 retained in place by a cross pin 12a. Semi-cylindrical recesses 3a in the shank co-operate with corresponding recesses in the part 5 to receive pins 9 passing through holes in the sleeve 8 and retained in place by the head of the screw 11. The toolholder 6 may be offset so that when the flat 5 abuts the sleeve at one end of its travel the bore for the tool is coaxial with the shank, this serving as zero position. The graduations are arranged to read in thousandths of an inch. On removal of the pin 12a and end 12 the pins 9 may be withdrawn; if now the screw 17 be slackened to clear the jaw 3 the tool head can be removed as a unit from the shank.
