Abstract

553,991. Iron production. ISHERWOOD. F. A. Dec. 3, 1941, No. 15560. [Class 72] [Also in Group VI] Iron is obtained from ferrous formate prepared by mixing concentrated solutions of ferrous sulphate and a soluble formate. The precipitate is washed with water, aqueous alcohol, alcohol, and finally ether, being dried in a current of warm air. Cans containing ferrous formate are passed through a long iron tube, the central portion of which is heated to 400‹C, approximately. Hydrogen completely freed from oxygen and water vapour is passed through at such a rate of flow that when the doors are opened to remove or insert cans the outrush of gas prevents access of air. Instead of the ferrous formate, ferric oxide, ferrous carbonate or ferrous oxalate may be used.
