Abstract

553,664. Drying powdered material. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 17, 1942, No. 13097. Convention date, Dec. 10, 1941. [Class 34 (ii)] Powdered ceramic material such as is used in making sparking plugs is dried by carrying it on a porous travelling belt 6 exposed to infra-red rays from lamps 34 and at the same time passing a current of dried air through the belt, which is doubled back in passing over rollers 16 in the path of the rays to invert the ceramic material carried on its surface. The air is supplied from a hood 36 above the lamps and is drawn off under suction through a duct 40 below. The material is supplied from a hopper 58 on to an endless belt 52 passing around a support 56 over one end of the belt 6, and is removed by a brush 24 as the belt passes around a roller 41 at the other end. Nozzles 46 direct air across the lenses of the lower lamps to remove dust. The belt may be made of glass or nylon fabric.
