553,171. Fluxes; uniting by fusion ; cellulose. ARC MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., HAIM, G., and McALLISTER, D. Nov. 3, 1941, No. 14164. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Groups IV and XXII] A welding rod coating composition comprises materials acting as fluxes in the welding operation and a proportion, e.g. up to 15 per cent. by weight, of one or more watersoluble cellulose derivatives such as a cellulose ether, e.g. a methyl cellulose containing 1.3-methyoxy groups per C 6 H 10 O 5 unit of cellulose or hydroxyethyl cellulose or their salts. Sodium and/or potassium silicate may also be included in the coating. If the electrodes are of mild steel, the coating has a base of rutile ilmenite or iron oxide or for stainless steel electrodes, a base of calcium fluoride, calcium carbonate or calcium titanate. In an example, a flux powder is prepared consisting of 50 parts rutile, 10 of ferro-manganese, 25 of felspar, 10 of kaolin and 5 of cellulose, e.g. wood pulp. 4 parts by weight of this powder are mixed with a gel in sufficient amount, about 1 part by weight, to form a stiff paste, the gel consisting of 1 part by weight of cellulose ether per 20 parts by weight of water. The mixture is extruded into a welding rod and the coating dried at 120-200‹C.
