Abstract
552,725. Regulating fuel injection pumps. LUCAS, Ltd., J., IFIELD, R. J., and WATSON, E. A. Oct. 17, 1941, Nos. 13400/41 and 5330/42. [Class 102 (i)] In a fuel injection system in which a pump driven by a prime mover supplies fuel to one or more nozzles, an accumulator is first charged by the pump in the starting operation, and subsequently delivers its charge to the nozzles through a valve-controlled outlet. The accumulator comprises a piston b slidable in a cylinder a and loaded by one or more springs c, a weight, or gas under pressure, and the discharge valve h is opened when a predetermined quantity of fuel has been supplied to the accumulator, or when a predetermined pressure is reached in the system. In the form shown in Fig. 2, one end of a stem j on the valve h passes through the piston b, and its other end is anchored by a spring m. When the piston b approaches the end of its movement it engages a collar k on the stem j and opens the valve h. The piston b returns to discharge the accumulator and' augment the delivery from the pump, the valve h remaining open as long as the pump is in action. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the cylinder a is provided with a side passage v containing the valve h under the control of a spring-loaded piston o of larger diameter. When the valve h is closed, the outlet connection y is connected, by one or more grooves t in the piston o, to a drainage connection x.
