Abstract

552,547. Reciprocating pumps. KENT, R. L., and MORRIS, J. N. Feb. 20, 1942, No. 2284. [Class 102 (i)] A fuel injection or other reciprocating pump comprises a number of plungers c within stationary cylindrical pump chambers b arranged around a common axis with one end open to a plane seating surface p abutted by an eccentrically mounted valve t to which is imparted an epicyclic motion to control the admission of liquid to the pump chambers and to convey it to a large number of discharge passages s in the desired sequence. The plungers c are operated against springs d by a wobble plate e in which the geometrical centre of its external spherical surface g is displaced from that of an axial spherical recess j which receives a ring n on an oblique sleeve k rotatable with the driving shaft m and slidable along it to adjust the stroke of the plungers c by means of a lever o. The valve t comprises two coaxial parts 2, 3 pressed against seatings p, u by springs w in recesses x provided with sealing bushes y and rings z. The valve is actuated bv an eccentric 6 on the shaft m and its outer periphery carries gear teeth 8 to engage an internally toothed annulus 9. For a twelve cylinder engine there may be six pump chambers b communicating with eight equally spaced arcuate ports 4 in the valve t, the latter having eight circular ports 5 arranged in pairs communicating with twelve holes v arranged in three groups of four and leading to staggered discharge passages s. In a modification a one-piece valve has all its ports adjacent the cylinder block.
